Lily desperately wants to help with the war effort by growing a victory garden. When she learns that she is too young to apply, she asks for space in her neighbor's yard. The neighbors are grieving the loss of their son to the war, and the garden proves to help all of them endure this trying time.
Lily's Victory Garden feels like a picture book with beautifully detailed watercolor pictures, but it reads as an early chapter book. The writing isn't as fluid and poetic as the images, but the story will have appeal for young readers.
